General Dynamics Mission Systems is celebrating its 60th year in the UK.  Since setting up a small office in London in 1962 to provide support for its avionics mission systems, the business has continued to grow, and is a trusted supplier of advanced electronic solutions for avionic platforms, supporting British and international forces.

Over the last 60 years we’ve invest in and contributed significantly to the UK, national prosperity, and innovation.  Building on our UK roots, we have pioneered cutting-edge technology at our multiple sites, supported small- and medium-sized enterprises and supply chains, joined major collaborations to advance the UK’s capabilities, and helped to develop the knowledge, skills and facilities to ensure those capabilities remain world-leading.

We are the only recognised SMS provider in UK and involved in all current UK MoD weapons integration programmes and research.  Furthermore, we are working closely with MoD to develop the next generation of specialist safe secure avionics computing platforms.

With 700 employees, we have developed strong technical and manufacturing capabilities in the UK, and are an approved defence contractor under the UK Government Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Design Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS). We continue to invest in technology enhancements to ensure we provide the latest advanced capability solutions.

Weapons management and control system

Our weapons management and control system comprising weapons carriage, release and stores management provides a complete solution for installation of any air-launched smart or legacy weapons onto a helicopter.  With flexibility in mind, our scalable and highly adaptable solution supports any configuration – from federated to distributed, installed during platform build or as a weaponisation kit post-delivery.

Our experience covers the breadth of weapon system types (A-A, A-G, A-S), and the dominant UK weapons such as Brimstone, Martlett, Freefall LMM and Meteor.

Approved by the UK MAA, our system utilises high integrity safety interlocks developed to RTCA/DO-254 DAL A, in combination with RTCA/DO-178C DAL C compliant software architecture.  Our unique Rapid Store Integration Capability (RSIC) software enables new weapon integration for a fraction of the time and cost compared to traditional solutions. Trusted by major helicopter OEMs, our systems are in-service both in the UK and with international forces.

Mission data management, processing and secure storage

The collective capability of our configurable mission data management, processing and storage systems has been key to their selection for use on a number of UK (Wildcat, Merlin) and international (CH-148) military helicopters.  Typical configurations include a mission computer used to host the operational flight programme (OFP), along with our digital moving map situational awareness application (SoftMap).  Capacity also enables it to host our unique software-based Data-Link processor (NetLink) negating the need for an additional dedicated LRU.

Not ignoring the significant volumes of data being created and processed, interconnected will be our high-speed 1TB SSD secure data recorder which is the only data recorder accredited to Secret level by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Recent investment focused on next generation platform data distribution has resulted in low SWAP-C, high end processing capabilities ready for the demands of data fusion and automation with an ability for fast modification, integration of third party software and hosting of AI based applications.

SATAVIA is a Cambridge-based data analytics company with the mission of making aviation smarter and greener.

Combining deep aerospace connections with an agile start-up culture, SATAVIA is able to scale quickly and adapt to new opportunities and partnerships. Rooted in scientific and technological acumen and working with leading global players ranging from Microsoft and AWS to Airbus and Safran, SATAVIA embodies an entrepreneurial mindset with the ambition to transform the relationship between aerospace and the environment. SATAVIA’s growing team offers unique SME capacity, ranging from atmospheric science to cloud physics, and from agile software and API development to aerospace project management.

SATAVIA’s technology is powered by 5-DX, a unique atmospheric twin of the entire Earth’s atmosphere that enables decision-making (DX) across five dimensions for applications across multiple sectors. SATAVIA’s 5-DX technology leverages best-in-class data analytics to power high-impact aviation use-cases, preventing aircraft contrails to eliminate up to 60% of aviation’s climate impact (DECISIONX: NETZERO) and enabling smarter, more cost-effective fleet maintenance (DECISIONX: FLEET).

DECISIONX: 5-DX

SATAVIA’s 5-DX digital twin offers uniquely actionable insight for all organisations affected by atmosphere, climate and ocean, quantifying multiple parameters from surface to space and informing decision-making across 3-D space, time and probability.

Whether enabling smarter design of new airframes and engines or facilitating high-accuracy atmospheric simulations, DECISIONX:5-DX provides decision-makers with unparalleled insight into the atmospheric environment. In a fast-growing digital twin market forecast to be worth $106bn by 2028, 5-DX offers standout resolution, fidelity, and flexibility, empowering a host of use-cases from surface to space.

Aircraft contrails are responsible for up to 60% for aviation’s climate impact, equivalent to 2% of all human climate impact. DECISIONX:NETZERO enables aircraft operators to prevent contrail formation and associated climate impacts, while capturing benefits through carbon equivalent offset credits. The platform incorporates three components: 1) contrail likelihood forecasting; 2) optimised flight planning to avoid contrail formation zones while simultaneously minimising additional fuel burn; and 3) quantification, validation, and offsetting of contrail prevention activity via an accredited voluntary offsetting platform, creating a new global market worth up to $9bn at current voluntary carbon pricing.

SATAVIA recently participated in Aviation X Lab, a Dubai-based incubator bringing together global aerospace giants including Emirates, Airbus, Thales, Collins, and GE. During the programme, SATAVIA carried out the world’s first contrail prevention flight planning exercise with an airline flight operations division, creating viable flight plans that avoided contrail formation using industry-standard software, and demonstrating potential to save over 100T of carbon equivalent (CO2e) per modified flight plan. SATAVIA is now engaging with multiple operators and stakeholders, and aims to become the industry standard for contrail prevention and offsetting across civil and military aviation.

All mobile and static aviation assets are exposed to environmental contaminants such as dust, air pollution and sea salt. Operators are aware that contaminants cause faster asset degradation but lack accurate quantification of contaminant exposure and its implications for asset maintenance and availability.

DECISIONX:FLEET manages the impact of the atmospheric environment on mobile and static assets on land or in the air. DECISIONX:FLEET enables smarter condition monitoring by tracking exposure to atmospheric contaminants and climatic effects, allowing for more accurate prediction of maintenance requirements and preventing costly unforeseen asset degradation (a market worth $20.48 billion in aviation [2017 figures]). By helping users to understand the risks posed to their assets by localised and atmospheric conditions, DECISIONX:FLEET improves asset availability and lifetime while reducing key metrics such as fuel burn, cost of maintenance, and overall cost of ownership. Customers for DECISIONX:FLEET have included Airbus, Safran, Lufthansa Technik, and Rolls-Royce.

ALA Launches Corporate Social Responsibility Program

ALA – Advanced Logistics for Aerospace is pleased to announce that it has launched its first Corporate Social Responsibility program. A new initiative to promote its work in relation to sustainability, accessibility, charity and community.

The global stocking distributor and supply chain solutions provider to the aerospace & defence, energy and industrial markets is to integrate the principles of sustainability into its business models.

Fulvio Scannapieco, ALA President, commented: “There is a new insight in the globalized world: doing business is not only about making a profit, but it is also about having the capacity of sharing the generated value with stakeholders and the surrounding context. Indeed, we are in an era in which growth and development are pursued considering the present needs, without undermining those of the future generations. To create shared value, companies should be able to cope with economic, social and environmental goals with a view to sustainability. Companies believing in this principle strive to integrate sustainability in their own business model. They commit to adopt comprehensive, widespread and clear communication policies going beyond the mere representation of economic and financial results.

ALA has decided to align to these facts voluntarily, and with great excitement, take up the challenge represented by the Corporate Social Responsibility 2019 to support the cultural transformation process that started some time ago. Such process has led the Company to the assumption of a corporate identity aimed at sustainability values. This is about an initial evaluation phase related to the financial year 2019. ALA, which intends to give continuity to such process, expects to obtain constant and durable improvements thanks to the commitment and work done by the whole organization.”

The CSR program has been launched along with the ALA 2019 financial results. The Group’s latest financial statement shows a revenue increase of 14.24% and an even higher increase in EBITDA with a 38.77% increase, when compared with the 2018 financial results.

During the shareholders meeting, the Board of Directors has been renewed, with the confirmation of the Chairman, Fulvio Scannapieco, the Vice Chairman, Vittorio Genna, the CEO, Gennaro di Capua and the member of the Board, Matteo Scannapieco. In addition, Marco Fiorentino has been appointed a new member of the Board.
